Course Goal / Objective
Helping the students to set the material properties on their minds not by memorization but as logic, and the connection of these properties with each other. To comprehend material properties, material selection and the importance of this in production, to understand the logic of the student taking the course. To be able to make the right material choices in working life. To be able to understand the cause of the problems encountered about the material and to produce a solution. Understand how they will need to test situations that may cause problems in the material.
Course Content
Introduction to material properties. Mechanical properties. Understanding of stress and strain concepts. Defining Static and Dynamic properties. Tensile Test. Understanding the logic of the stress and strain diagram. Examination of the concepts of Modulus of Elasticity, Modulus of Resilience, Yield and Tensile Strength. Differences between True Stress and True Strain concepts from engineering stress and strain. Understanding the ductility and brittleness concepts. Definition of rigidity, malleability and formability concepts. Investigation of Toughness and Hardness. A Hardness Tests: Brinell Hardness Test, Rockwell Hardness Test, Vickers Hardness Test, Microhardness Test, Shore Sclerescope Test, Durometer. Compression tests. Detailed Processing of Dynamic Properties. Ductile - Brittle Transition Temperatures of Materials and the importance of this concept. Factors Affecting Dynamic Properties. Detailed treatment of the concept of fatigue in materials. Factors affecting fatigue. Detailed treatment of creep concept in material. Creep graphics. Physical Properties.
