Course Goal / Objective

The scope of this course is to teach organic chemistry that provide contributions for pharmaceutical chemistry course in pharmacy education.

Course Content

Basic concepts in organic chemistry, functional groups in organic molecules, alkanes, alkenes, alkynes and their reactions, aliphatic ring structures and isomers, stereochemistry, bioactive chiral compounds, alkyl halides, alcohols, thiols, ethers, epoxides, sulfides, organic reactions and mechanism of synthesis. Aromatics and aromatic heterocyclic compounds, their properties and reactions, aldehydes and ketones, their properties, synthesis and reactions, carboxylic acid and its derivatives; esters, amides, acid anhydrides, acyl halides and nitriles, and their properties and reactions, amines, bioorganic molecules such as carbohydrates, amino acids, nucleic acids and lipids, their structures and properties.

LO05 To get an idea about stereochemistry and to determine the stereochemistry in drug molecules.
LO06 To understand the importance of chirality in drugs and bioactive molecules.
LO07 To have knowledge of the physical and chemical properties of synthetic organic molecules.
LO08 To have an idea about the reactions used in the synthesis of active molecules in pharmaceutical products.
