Course Goal

To give students the ability to recognize and classify magmatic rocks in hand samples and thin sections by giving information about magmatic rock types formed by the formation and cooling and solidification of magma. To teach students the concept of metamorphism and the factors affecting it, to gain knowledge about metamorphic rock types, to recognize and classify metamorphic rocks in hand samples and thin sections.

Course Content

Definition of petrography, rock cycle, structure of the earth, magma, relations of magmatism and tectonics, physical and chemical features of magma, stages of crystallization of magma, types of magma emplacement in crust, classification of magmatic rocks, types of magmatic rocks, pyroclastic rocks. Definition of metamorphism, development of metamorphism, relations of metamorphism and tectonics, factors responsible for metamorphism, P and T, types of metamorphism, metamorphic facies, zone and grid concepts, metamorphic rock types.
