Course Goal / Objective

Aim of this lecture is to teach concepts of nuclear decay and radioactivity and Provide better understanding of nuclear structure and nuclear reactions of radioactive decays.

In this lecture Radioactive decay: Production and decay of radioactivityGrowth of daughter activities, types of decay, natural radioactivitySolution related problems, Measurement of nuclear reactions: Interaction of radiation with matter, Gas-filled countersScintillation detectors, semiconductor detectors, counting statistics, Energy measurementCoincidnece measurements and time resolution, other dedector typesSolution related problems, Alpha Decay: Basic decomposition reactions, systematic of decomposition, emission theory angular momentum and parity in alpha decay , decay spectroscopy, energy released in alpha decay, solution related problems, Beta Decay: Fermi theory of beta decay, classical experimental verification of Fermi Theory, angular momentum and parity selection rules,Double beta decay, solution related problems, Gamma decay: Energetics of Gamma DecayQuantum mechanical expression, angular momentum and parity selection rules
