Course Goal

Aims of this course are: 1. To reveal the relationships between history and communication. 2. To reveal that the history of communication is not just the history of tools in terms of chronology. 3. To give a critical perspective related to the concepts of history and communication. 4. To show that the discussions on communication and history cannot be limited to the reality of only one paradigm. 5. To examine the historical developments of communication tools. 6. To examine the communication types which are dominant from their starting point until today. 7. To reveal the relationships between history, writing history, knowledge, power and dominant communication types. 8. To reveal why analysis which is examined within the frame of social, political, cultural and economic relationships of the examined period of time in the analyses of the history of communication.

Course Content

This course includes topics of the distinction between oral culture/written culture, paper, book, printing press, first communication systems; the birth of modern journalism; communication systems, the Industrial Revolution and communication (factory system, mass production, etc.), communication in the world and in the Ottoman Empire, the short story of the printing press and the press; the development of telecommunications from the telegraph to the present day (visual telegraph, electric telegraph, telephone, etc.); internet and network society.
