Course Goal / Objective

To enable graduate students to learn qualitative research techniques and to gain the ability to plan research projects based on qualitative research in mathematics education. In this context, information about the characteristics and types of qualitative research (phenomenology, theory building, ethnography, case study, action research) will be given and examples will be shared in the class. The next step will focus on the process. In this context, the planning of qualitative research, the formation of research questions, data collection methods, validity and reliability, data analysis and the use of qualitative research results will be applied in practice. Students will make a sample application and share the sample applications in the class, and class discussions will be held on the purpose of the research, the chosen method, the type of analysis used, the appropriateness of the sampling technique, the suitability of the situations considered for the reliability and validity of the research.

Characteristics of scientific research, steps of scientific research, types of scientific research, introduction to qualitative research methods, data collection in qualitative research: observation, analysis of observation data, data collection in qualitative research: interview, analysis of interview data, data collection in qualitative research, examination of written documents, analysis, case study: case study, reporting of data obtained in qualitative research, examining qualitative research patterns in mathematics education, collecting, analyzing and reporting data based on qualitative research method in mathematics education.
