Course Goal

The aim of this course is to provide the students with an overview of biotechnology in animal feeds and feeding. The students will acquire knowledge of using enzymes to improve fibrous feeds like straw or poor quality roughages. In addition, a wide variety of feed additives that can reduce methanogenesis, protein degradation, improve microbial protein synthesis and inhibit protozoa.

Course Content

The main subjects of the course are description of biotechnological tools to maximize production efficiency and animal health and to reducing nutrient excretion. Within this scope, enzymes, protected proteins, plant extracts, probiotics and oligosaccharides, organic minerals is described. In addition, the prospects and perspectives for the use of biotechnology in nutrition to increase animal production is discussed.

Course Precondition

General Animal Nutrition and Ruminant Nuttion or approval of the instructors are needed.

Resources

Enzymes in Farm Animal Nutrition (CABI Publishing, 2001)
