Course Goal

Learn basic principles of bioethanol production from field crops.

Course Content

Biofuels can be considered one of the most promising alternatives to fossil fuels, since they are renewable, sustainable, environmentally friendly, and cost-effective. Bioethanol is currently the most consumed type of biofuel in the global transportation sector, which is generally blended with gasoline to reduce gasoline consumption, improve octane, and promote more complete combustion. Several field crops such as sugarcane, sweet sorghum, maize, miscanthus, switchgrass, etc., are widely known to have a great potential for bioethanol production due to their high biomass yield, GHG savings, and fermentable sugar or structural carbohydrate contents. In order to ensure sustainable bioethanol production, bioenergy crops must be cultivated with minimum input, management techniques must be applied properly, and the most suitable species and production methods must be chosen depending on the ecological conditions. Consequently, fundamental principles of sustainable bioethanol production will be discussed in this course.
