Course Goal / Objective
To discuss the phenomenon of internal migration in Turkey from the perspective of rural and urban areas, agriculture and rural population.
Course Content
Within the scope of this course, firstly, basic concepts related to migration will be defined; Ottoman and Republican Period population movements will be examined in the historical process; Classical and modern theories of migration will be explained, along with types and causes of migration; policies related to migration will be discussed in terms of development and local governments; economics of migration, immigrants (income, debt…) and social aspects (health, education, employment…) will be discussed; The place of migration movements in globalization, modernization and development will be examined. Secondly, internal migration studies conducted in Turkey will be examined; The phenomenon of internal migration will be discussed in terms of social change; Rural/urban space change as a result of internal migration will be discussed in terms of both those left behind and newcomers, and will be discussed together with the concept of rural/urban memory; Disadvantaged groups in terms of internal migration (children, youth, women and elderly population) will be examined from a gender perspective; seasonal labor migration will be discussed over agricultural workers and specifically in terms of child labor and women. Third and lastly, public and private sector institutions (university research centers, NGOs, TR. General Directorate of Migration Management….) related to migration in Turkey will be examined; purposes and functions of these institutions will be explained.
