Course Goal

Year class strength is tightly connected with the feeding, growth and mortality of the early life stages. Environmental conditions can drive the year class strength via regulating the vital rates of the embryonic and larval stages. This course will give an introduction about the dynamics of abundance, distribution, feeding and condition, growth and mortality of the ichthyoplanktonic stages. In addition, the effects on environmental conditions on the vital parameters will also be involved. Finally, the structure, formation, maintenance and disruption of ichthyoplankton assemblages in coastal and open waters of Mediterranean Sea will be explained on case studies. Finally, recruitment hypotheses will be discussed.

Course Content

Selection strategies and cohort dynamics, Development and distribution patterns of fishes, Feeding of fish larvae in the marine environment, Growth and condition of fish eggs and larvae, Influence of temperature and oxygen, Influence of vertical mixings, stratification and enrichment, Influence of salinity and osmoregulation, Influence of light, depth, turbidity and viscosity, Influence of pH, contaminants and developmental defects, Mortality in fish eggs and larvae, Recruitment hypotheses, Formation and structure of ichthyoplankton assemblages, Influence of environmental conditions on the ichthyoplankton assemblages
