Course Goal

It is aimed to teach the participants about women assertion on inequality and gender discrimination to which Turkish women are exposed from past to present, and evolution of feminist ideology. Besides, it is aimed that the participants acquire to interpret intellectual basis of women movement in Turkey according to feminist theories.

Course Content

In this course covered women social situations in modernizing The Ottoman Empire in 19. century, changes in domestic and public roles of women realized by Westernization of The Ottoman Empire, solidarity and struggle practices of women against patriarchal authority, and their journalism and literary works.In this context contributions and opinions of pioneer women, such as Makbule Leman, Fatma Aliye, Emine Semiye and Poet Nigar etc., will be covered. Furthermore, it is discussed that reforms after establishing Republic of Turkey, effects of Kemalist modernization on women social lives, education and working opportunities for women, limitations in public sphere for women and shortly idealized women image and women sphere related with Westernization goals of the Republic. Besides Nezihe Muhiddin and Turkish Women Union are addressed. In addition, Turkish women's movement will be analyzed in the context of world women's movement and related feminist waves.
