Course Goal / Objective

The aim of this course is to teach the historical process of child protection in the world and in Turkey and to explain the concept of child protection in sports.

Course Content

Within the scope of this course, in the context of the child's fundamental rights, his right to rest, spend his free time, play, and participate freely and fully in physical and cultural activities appropriate to his age will be presented. Ways to provide appropriate and equal opportunities for children to access physical, sports and cultural events and activities will be discussed. In order to establish the sports environment within the framework of these principles, interactive suggestions will be developed for the development of protection policies in sports and the creation of safe and inclusive sports areas. It will be discussed what the risks and dangers that some practices that have become dominant and normalized in the sports culture, which plays an important role in the socialization processes of children, may pose for children. The effects of coercive and oppressive qualities that can harm children's well-being, such as power, prestige, performance, power relations, and achievement orientation, will be addressed. Due to the common occurrence of physical relationships in sports, together with the qualities in question, their potential to reveal risks of violence and abuse against children will be highlighted. Thus, discussions will be held on ways to protect children from the culture of violence that has become accustomed and normalized by athletes and their families as well as coaches, administrators and other professionals in sports.
