Course Goal / Objective
Definition of pyhysicochemical systems with help of variables and state functions. Knowledge about ideal gases, real gases, mixtures and phase diagrams. Interpretation of reaction rate.
Course Content
Basic concepts, system and state functions. properties of state functions, Gas laws, mixtures of ideal gases. Real gases, molecular interactions, deviations from ideal gas behavior, Boyle temperature, compression factor, virial equation of state, Van der Waals equation, Kinetic theory of gases, Maxwell-Boltzman distributions, internal energy, enthalpy, variation of internal energy with temperature and volume, variation of enthalpy with temperature and pressure. Mixtures, partial molar quantities, chemical potential. Phase rule of Gibbs. Thermodynamics of ideal mixtures, Nernst distribution law, extraction. Raoult, Henry, Dalton laws, adsorption-desorption, phase diagrams of two component systems, distillation, solid-liquid equilibrium, nonelectrolyte mixtures, partial fugacity coefficient.Liquid-solid mixtures, activity and activity coefficient. Phase diagrams of partially miscible liquids, phase diagrams of liquid-solid and solid-solid, eutectic, peritectic, distectic, three component systems.Electrical concepts, electrolyte solutions, Debye-Huckel theory, conductivity, ion mobility, transport number, difussion, resistivity. Chemical kinetics, reaction rates, reactions in solutions, complex reaction rates.
