Course Goal / Objective

To culture phytoplankton in laboratory and outdoor, open and closed systems, to supply the reguired physical and chemical conditions to culture phytoplankton and zooplankton, to determine the phytoplankton ve zooplankton species and their basic biological needs. To define culture methods, microalgal isolation methods, growth and measure. Prepare the growth medium and inoculate to the culture. Harvest the phytoplankton and zooplankton, know the harvesting methods.

Course Content

Culture conditions of phytoplanktonic organisms, continuous and batch culture methods, microalgal culture and sterilisation, microalgae isolation techniques, laboratory conditions, physical and chemical conditions necessary for the culture of microalgae, description of algal growth, parameters of algal growth and mesurements, the medium preparation and nutrients, inoculations, harvesting, microalgal culture in the ponds outdoor, description of photobioreactor, zooplankton culture, phytoplankton and zooplankton species cultured.

LO05 Describes the cultures of algae growth, makes the definition of growth, defines the growth parameters, makes the analysis of chlorophyll a, counts cell, measures optical density of the culture.
LO06 Counts the microalgal isolaion methods and explains them.
LO07 Defines the continuous and batch culture, prepare the growt medium.
LO08 Defines the isolations techniques of microalgae, prepare the solid medium using agar, makes planting.
