Course Goal / Objective

To learn water pollution and its importance, to recognise the emerging pollutants, to understand the presence, distribution, damages and toxic effects of these pollutants in the environmental environment, their transfer and bioaccumulation in the food chain, their effects on the aquatic environment, to know the current agreements, laws and regulations on the subject.

Course Content

Definition and importance of water pollution in aquatic ecosystems, types and causes of water pollution, definition and types of emerging pollutants, environmental agreements, laws and regulations, aquatic toxicology, heavy metals, oil pollution, types of organic pollutants, persistent organic pollutants (POPs), biocides and pesticides, personal care products and pharmaceuticals (PPCPs), occurrence and distribution of these pollutants in the environment, their hazards and toxic effects, transfer and bioaccumulation in the food chain, effects on the aquatic environment, degradation of organic pollutants and eutrophication: Effects and sources of eutrophication on aquatic ecosystems.
