Course Goal / Objective

It is well-known today that ideas about gender increase our knowledge of the world and everyday life, and contribute to our understanding of human behaviour, cultural expression and intellectual inquiry. This course aims to provide the students with a comprehensive introduction to issues of gender as they relate to the understanding of space, in order to explore the dialectical relationships between social constructions of gender and the production and use of spaces, together with the relationship between gender ideologies and conceptualisations of space. Building on the discussion of contemporary theoretical texts from various disciplines, it aims to guide students in understanding and questioning well-established oppositions like `male/female`, `private/public`, `home/work`, and to provide them with a critical framework for the comprehension and investigation of both spaces and subjects as gendered.

Course Content

This course aims to provide the students with a comprehensive introduction to issues of gender as they relate to the understanding of space, in order to help them explore the dialectical relationships between social constructions of gender and the production and use of spaces, together with the relationship between gender ideologies and conceptualisations of space and place.
