Course Goal / Objective

This course aims to enable students to understand the psychological counseling processes carried out with children, to learn appropriate counseling techniques and approaches considering the developmental characteristics of children, to develop effective strategies in therapeutic interventions for children, and to gain the skills to professionally assess the psychological needs of children.

Course Content

Within the scope of this course, basic issues regarding the psychological counseling process with children will be discussed. In this context, we will first focus on the history of the psychological counseling process with children, the aspects of the psychological counseling process with children that differ from adult psychological counseling will be included, the stages of the psychological counseling process with children (preparation for the interview, establishing a relationship, goal setting, intervention and termination) and how to work with parents in this process. The subject will be discussed. It will be emphasized how the psychological counseling process may change according to age groups, basic intervention approaches (play therapy, art therapy, puppet therapy, etc.) will be introduced and some application examples of these approaches will be given. Finally, ethical and legal issues will be discussed.
