Course Goal / Objective
This course aims to provide students with a comprehensive understanding of experimental models of important neurological and psychiatric disorders such as convulsions and depression and their role in research and drug development.
Course Content
Experimental convulsion models - Introduction, Basic neurobiology of convulsion (Neuronal excitability, inhibitory and excitatory neurotransmitters, ion channels and receptors), Classification of convulsion models (Chemical (pentylenetetrazole, etc.), electrical (maximal electroshock, etc.), genetic and other models (kindling, etc.). ), Mechanisms of convulsion models (Which neurotransmitter systems these models affect, in which brain regions they cause activity and through which molecular mechanisms they produce convulsions), Evaluation of anticonvulsant drugs (Evaluation of different anticonvulsant drugs (e.g, phenytoin, carbamazepine, valproic acid) evaluation of their efficacy and mechanisms of action on these models), Model Selection and Limitations (Discussion of issues such as selection of the appropriate model for the research question, advantages and disadvantages of the models, interpretation of the results and clinical implications), Depression Models-Introduction, Basic neurobiology of depression (The roles of monoamine neurotransmitters (serotonin, norepinephrine, dopamine), neurotrophic factors (BDNF), hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis, inflammation and other factors in the pathophysiology of depression), Classification of depression models (Behavioral (e.g., forced swim test, tail hanging test, chronic mild stress, etc.), genetic, pharmacological and other models (e.g., social isolation)), Mechanisms of depression models (Which neurotransmitter systems these models affect, which brain regions they affect, which brain regions are altered, etc.). ), genetic, pharmacological and other models (e.g., social isolation)), Mechanisms of depression models (Examination of issues such as which neurotransmitter systems these models affect, which brain regions they cause changes in, and through which molecular mechanisms they produce depression-like behaviors), Evaluation of Antidepressant Drugs (Investigation of the efficacy and mechanisms of action of different antidepressant drugs (SSRIs, SNRIs, tricyclic antidepressants, etc.) on these models), Model Selection and Limitations (Selection of the appropriate model for the research question, advantages and disadvantages of models, interpretation of results and clinical implications). (Investigation of the efficacy and mechanisms of action of different antidepressant drugs (SSRIs, SNRIs, tricyclic antidepressants, etc.) on these models), Model Selection and Limitations (Discussion of issues such as selection of the appropriate model for the research question, advantages and disadvantages of the models, interpretation of the results and clinical implications), Experimental Design and Ethical Considerations, R&D studies on experimental convulsion and depression models
