Course Goal / Objective

The aim of this course is to train nursing students to become professionals who can assess the physiological, psychological, and social needs of elderly individuals with a holistic approach, conduct comprehensive geriatric assessments, manage chronic diseases and geriatric syndromes, support healthy and active aging, and are aware of their ethical and legal responsibilities.

Course Content

Geriatric nursing is a field that focuses on protecting and improving the health of the elderly and implementing nursing interventions for their treatment in case of illness.

LO01 It explains the biological, psychological, and social dimensions of the aging process, along with demographic characteristics, using evidence-based information, and monitors current developments through a lifelong learning approach.
LO02 This document explains the roles and responsibilities of a geriatric nurse within the framework of ethical and legal principles, as well as a safe care approach.
LO03 It performs comprehensive geriatric assessments; using appropriate screening tools, it analyzes geriatric syndromes and risk factors with evidence-based approaches.
LO04 It identifies the care needs for common chronic diseases and geriatric problems in older individuals and plans and implements nursing care in accordance with safe care principles.
LO05 It evaluates rational drug use and polypharmacy in elderly individuals in accordance with evidence-based approaches and ensures drug safety.
LO06 It assesses the nutritional, sleep, physical activity, and safety needs of older individuals; plans and implements evidence-based nursing interventions that support healthy and active aging.
LO07 They recognize elder abuse and neglect; and manage home care, palliative care, and end-of-life care processes in accordance with ethical principles, safe care practices, and a lifelong learning approach.
