Course Goal / Objective

It is aimed that students gain knowledge of basic statistical notion in post graduation and pharmacy application fields and have knowledge about statistical concepts which are encountered in and after pharmacy education.

Course Content

The content of the ECF 115 Mathematics-Biostatistics course begins with fundamental definitions such as population, sample, and variable, and covers the classification of data types (nominal, ordinal, interval/ratio) and their presentation in appropriate tables or graphs, as well as appropriate analysis methods for each data type. Students learn to calculate confidence intervals used to estimate population values, along with measures of central tendency and dispersion used to summarize data, the assumption of normal distribution, and the concept of random error. Course topics include parametric methods such as independent and dependent samples t-tests, ANOVA, correlation, and regression, as well as non-parametric tests such as Mann-Whitney U and Wilcoxon, which are used when the assumptions of parametric methods are not met. Furthermore, various Chi-square tests used in the analysis of nominal data, risk measures such as Relative Risk and Odds Ratio, and the interpretation of statistical significance in light of clinical equivalence and "non-inferiority" concepts are taught. The final section of the course examines observational studies such as cross-sectional, case-control, and cohort studies, as well as experimental research designs including clinical trial phases, within the framework of the scientific evidence pyramid.
