Course Goal / Objective

This course aims to teach the use of traditional and modern image processing techniques in soil survey and mapping studies. It is aimed to contribute to soil classification and mapping processes by processing and analyzing data obtained from remote sensing sources such as satellite images, aerial photographs and drone data.

Course Content

Basic principles of remote sensing and image processing techniques in soil survey studies. Use of satellite images, aerial photographs and drone data in soil mapping processes. Geographic correction methods of images. Identification of different soil types using remote sensing data. Soil classification with supervised and unsupervised classification methods. Monitoring soil changes through change detection and time series analysis. Applied software usage studies (QGIS, Google Earth Engine etc.). Map production with real field data. Students are expected to develop and present individual or group projects.
