Course Goal / Objective

The main purpose of this course is to examine the development and change processes in the physical, socioemotional, and cognitive domains that occur during the aging process.

Course Content

This course covers the definition of the aging process and the history of scientific studies on aging; the demographic characteristics of older adults in our country and around the world; the research methods used in aging studies; and the psychological, physical, and socioemotional changes that occur during the aging process. Approximately 75% of the course content will be based on the textbook, while the remaining 25% will come from research published on the subject within the last three years and discussed during the course.

LO04 Students will be able to recognize the major research methods and statistical techniques used in older adulthood.
LO05 Students will be able to explain developmental characteristics and changes in cognitive domains such as sensation, perception, attention, memory, and mental functioning in older adulthood.
LO06 Students will be able to recognize mental health issues that frequently arise in older adulthood and identify types of available therapy.
LO07 Students will be able to recognize the developmental pathways leading to successful aging and explain the conditions under which these pathways occur.
LO08 Students will be able to gain knowledge about the phenomenon of death and explain effective coping techniques for individuals during the grieving process.
