Course Goal / Objective

The aim of this course is to provide students with fundamental knowledge of nursery practices in temperate fruit species, including the basic principles of sexual and asexual propagation and grafting techniques. It also introduces key applications related to the management of nursery environments. The course is designed for non-specialist students to help them understand the essential concepts of seedling production in fruit growing and to enable them to apply this knowledge across different disciplines.

Course Content

This course introduces students to the classification of fruit species cultivated in temperate climates and the fundamental principles of seedling production in these species. It covers the significance of nursery production in agricultural systems and familiarizes students with essential terminology and concepts. The course explains both sexual (seed-based) and asexual (cutting, layering, grafting, etc.) propagation methods, with a particular focus on rootstock and scion selection. Emphasis is placed on grafting techniques such as cleft grafting, whip and tongue grafting, and budding. Topics such as rootstock propagation, preparation of nursery environments, and the management of environmental conditions are addressed in relation to seedling development. In addition, certified nursery production, legal regulations, and quality factors affecting seedlings are examined. By the end of the course, students are expected to gain a theoretical understanding of the main nursery techniques used for temperate fruit species and to reinforce this knowledge through practical examples.
