Course Goal / Objective
The aim of this course is to introduce the ecological, economic, and socio-cultural characteristics of marine and coastal areas, to teach management approaches in line with the principles of sustainable use and conservation in these areas, and to provide students with theoretical and practical knowledge on integrated coastal zone management (ICZM).
Course Content
Definition and scope of marine and coastal areas; structure and functioning of coastal ecosystems; natural resources and biological diversity in coastal areas; marine and coastal ecosystems (dune areas, lagoons, deltas, mangroves, coral reefs, seagrass beds); human activities and pressures in coastal areas (urbanization, tourism, industry, fishing, transportation); types and effects of marine and coastal pollution; effects of climate change on marine and coastal areas; coastal erosion and shoreline changes; conservation approaches in marine and coastal areas; marine protected areas and special environmental protection areas; the concept, principles, and applications of integrated coastal zone management (ICZM); legal and institutional framework in marine and coastal area management (international agreements, EU policies, and Turkish legislation); planning tools and management models; stakeholder participation and governance; current practices and case studies on sustainable marine and coastal area management.
