Course Goal / Objective
The course aims to teach the use of herbaceous and woody plants in xeriscape design for both aesthetic and functional purposes. Within the framework of the xeriscape approach, the course examines plant-climate relationships as well as the morphological and physiological characteristics of drought-tolerant species. The functional roles of herbaceous and woody plants within the design, along with the principles of plant composition (color, texture, form, and water efficiency), are evaluated. Additionally, the importance of native plant species in terms of sustainability and ecological adaptation is emphasized. Furthermore, the course aims to provide students with fundamental knowledge and concepts regarding the general characteristics of plant material, as well as its production and cultivation.
Course Content
This course covers the identification, classification, and use of herbaceous and woody plants in arid landscapes. The concept of aridity, climate zones, and plant adaptations are examined. The characteristics of important families, genera, and species used in outdoor settings, along with their aesthetic and functional applications, are evaluated. Basic information regarding the production, cultivation, and care of plants is provided. Additionally, the principles of arid landscape design are explained within the framework of plant composition and the use of native species.
Course Precondition
There are no prerequisites.
