Course Goal / Objective

Open-pit mining operations are experiencing rapid technological advancements due to their superiority over underground mining in terms of production efficiency, grade control, economics, and safety. This course will introduce open-pit systems and methods capable of producing at low unit costs, and examine the latest technological developments. Details regarding the performance of different excavation and transportation equipment will also be provided.

Course Content

This course provides a technical and operational roadmap covering all stages of modern open-pit mining. Beginning with fundamental principles, the process deepens with equipment selection based on the geomechanical properties of rocks and excavability analyses. The course teaches capacity and efficiency calculations for a wide range of machinery, from excavators and rotary bucket systems to draglines and continuous conveying systems. Theoretical knowledge is reinforced with overburden removal systems and conveying methods, and through field trips and practical projects, the goal is for students to achieve the competence to plan a real mine site design from end to end.
