Course Goal / Objective

Understanding cellular activities and the mechanisms that regulate these activities has an important place for innovative drug development studies. Within the scope of the course, the biological clock and its types; the control mechanisms of the biological clock at the cellular and organismal level, its relationship with our health; drug research on the biological clock and the importance of chronotherapy will be examined, so the course will be a guide for the development of innovative biotechnological drugs.

Course Content

Introduction to circadian rhythm and biological clock concepts, history and basic terms; evolution of circadian rhythms across species and conserved mechanisms; an overview of biological timing mechanisms from single cells to humans; fundamentals of circadian rhythm; circadian rhythm and photoperiodism; circadian pacemaker systems and analysis methods; genes responsible for circadian rhythm and their expression control mechanisms, the relationship between circadian rhythm and inflammation; circadian rhythm and metabolism; the relationship between circadian rhythm and chronic diseases; the relationship between circadian rhythm and cancer; the relationship between circadian rhythm and sleep disorders and diseases; chronotherapy; student presentations.

Course Learning Outcomes

Order Course Learning Outcomes
LO01 Defines the concepts of biological clock and circadian rhythm; explains evolutionary differences and similarities in biological timing mechanisms from single-celled organisms to humans
LO02 It analyzes the key clock genes involved in the formation of the circadian rhythm, the expression control mechanisms of these genes, and the molecular feedback loops.
LO03 Understands the working principles of circadian timer systems and interprets the current methods used in the analysis of these systems.
LO04 Correlate the physiological and pathological effects of the circadian rhythm on inflammation, metabolic processes, chronic diseases, cancer development, and sleep disorders.
LO05 Explains the concept of "Chronotherapy", which is the reflection of biological clock and circadian rhythm knowledge in medicine; evaluates the clinical importance of timing (dosage and drug interaction) in treatment processes.
LO06 Reads and analyzes current scientific articles in the field of biological clocks; effectively conveys and discusses an academic topic using oral presentation techniques.
