Course Goal / Objective

To investigate the site selection of ancient settlements, their interaction with the environment, and the temporal evolution of these sites through geoscientific methods; and to analyze archaeological deposits (sediments) to reconstruct past environmental and cultural processes

Course Content

Introduction to Geoarchaeology: Definitions, interdisciplinary working principles, and historical development. Geological time and human impact, Sedimentology and sedimentary environments, Geological characteristics of archaeological materials, Geochemistry and elemental distribution.

Course Precondition

No prerequisites.

Resources

Geoarchaeology: The Earth-Science Approach to Archaeological Interpretation (George Rapp and Christopher L. Hill)

Notes

Jeoarkeoloji: Yerbilimleri ve Arkeoloji (Editör: Ahmet Ertek & Murat Türkeş)

Course Learning Outcomes

Order Course Learning Outcomes
LO01 Interdisciplinary Synthesis: Apply geoscientific principles (geology, geomorphology, geochemistry) to address complex archaeological questions.
LO02 Identifies archaeological deposits (sediments), distinguishes between natural and cultural stratigraphy processes.
LO03 Characterize the physical properties and geological sources (provenance) of raw materials such as stone, clay, and metals used in antiquity.
LO04 Analyzes the geological (proximity to water sources, access to raw materials, ease of defense) and environmental factors in the settlement selection of ancient societies.
LO05 By analyzing elemental variations in soil and sediments (especially heavy metal accumulations; Pb, Cu, Zn, Cd), it identifies ancient industrial activities and their uses.
