Course Goal / Objective

The aim of this course is to teach the process of determining sanctions to be imposed for criminal offenses, the assessment of punishment within legal limits, and the individualization of punishment. The course is designed to enable students to acquire the ability to make legal evaluations regarding sentencing in light of the offender’s personal characteristics, the manner in which the offense was committed, and the specific circumstances of the case.

Course Content

This course examines the fundamental principles of sentencing, the principle of legality, determination of the basic penalty, discretionary mitigating factors, grounds for aggravation and mitigation, the effect of attempt, participation, and concurrence of offenses on punishment, alternative sanctions, suspension of sentence, deferment of the announcement of the verdict, alternatives to short-term imprisonment, and security measures.
