Course Goal / Objective
This course aims to examine the historical development, political and social impacts of the Shaykh al-Islam institution in the Ottoman Empire, focusing specifically on the life and activities of Zenbilli Ali Cemâlî Efendi.
Course Content
The course will cover the emergence, historical, political, and theoretical roots of the Shaykh al-Islam institution, its place and impacts within the Ottoman administrative system. Detailed attention will be given to the institutionalization of Shaykh al-Islam, political interactions, and significant fatwas, particularly through the case study of Zenbilli Ali Cemâlî Efendi.
