Course Goal / Objective

The aim of this course is to examine the major philosophical movements, problems and thinkers that emerged in the 20th century within their historical and conceptual contexts. The aim is for students to understand the intellectual transformations that have shaped the modern and contemporary world, to compare different philosophical traditions, and to develop their critical thinking skills. The course aims to demonstrate how fundamental issues such as language, knowledge, being, the subject, society and ethics were re-examined within the context of the 20th century.

Course Content

This course offers a systematic examination of the major thinkers and problems of the 20th century, exploring the fundamental trends in 20th-century philosophy within the framework of the distinction between analytic and continental philosophy. Within the scope of the course, the emergence of analytic philosophy, with its language- and logic-based approach, is discussed through the works of Bertrand Russell and Ludwig Wittgenstein; the phenomenological tradition is examined through Edmund Husserl, whilst issues of being and meaning are explored in the context of Martin Heidegger. Existentialism is addressed through the lens of human freedom and responsibility via Jean-Paul Sartre and Albert Camus, whilst hermeneutics is evaluated through the work of Hans-Georg Gadamer. Furthermore, critical theory is examined within the context of modern society and cultural criticism, drawing on the contributions of the Frankfurt School thinkers; structuralism and post-structuralism, meanwhile, are discussed through the lens of Michel Foucault and Jacques Derrida, within the framework of the relationships between knowledge, power and the subject. The course aims to present, from a comprehensive perspective, how these different approaches transformed 20th-century thought and laid the groundwork for contemporary philosophical debates.
