Course Goal / Objective

The aim of this course is to enable students to understand the fundamental characteristics and major designs of quantitative research in the social sciences; select and justify an appropriate research design for a research problem; relate variables, research questions, and hypotheses; define the population and sample and select an appropriate sampling method; evaluate data collection instruments; understand the basic principles of instrument development and adaptation; evaluate evidence of validity and reliability; and develop a methodologically coherent methodology section for a research study.

Course Content

Fundamental characteristics and classification of quantitative research; the relationship among the research problem, research questions, and methodology; variables and types of variables; research questions and hypotheses; survey, correlational, causal-comparative, experimental, and quasi-experimental research; population and sample; sample size; probability and non-probability sampling methods; quantitative data collection instruments; questionnaires, scales, and tests; selection of data collection instruments; basic principles of instrument development and adaptation; validity and reliability; internal and external validity in research designs; coherence among the research problem, design, sampling, and data collection procedures; development and critical evaluation of the methodology section of a research study.
