Course Goal / Objective

The objective of this lesson is to introduce the botanical, chemical, and pharmaceutical properties of aromatic and medicinal plants used in the perfume industry; to teach the methods of extracting important essential oils in pharmaceutical botany, the chemical structures of fragrance components, and the principles of perfume formulation; and to ensure that students acquire the ability to evaluate naturally derived fragrance materials both scientifically and practically.

Course Content

The History of Perfume and Fragrance Botanical Classification of Perfume Plants Essential Oils: Chemical Structure and Biosynthesis Methods of Essential Oil Extraction Perfume notes (top–middle–base) Major perfume plants and their active ingredients Natural and synthetic fragrance ingredients Perfume formulation and stability Quality control of perfumes Safety, toxicity, and regulations The use of fragrances in pharmacy and cosmetics Practical perfume preparation exercises
