Course Goal / Objective
The aim of this course is for students to learn, through direct practice, how to start from an original and feasible research question in the field of clinical psychology and then conduct a systematic literature review, formulate theory-driven hypotheses, select an appropriate design and measurement battery, meet ethical and open science requirements, collect and analyse data, and report and present their findings in accordance with scientific standards. The course further aims for students to develop the project proposal they produce over the semester to a level of maturity at which it can be submitted to a national research funding programme (TÜBİTAK 2209-A Research Project Support Programme for Undergraduate Students).
Course Content
Formulating and narrowing a research question in clinical psychology; systematic search strategies in electronic databases such as Web of Science, Scopus, PsycINFO, Google Scholar, TR Dizin and the YÖK National Thesis Centre; Boolean operators, field tags and citation chaining; evaluating the quality of journals and sources and recognising predatory publishing; reference management software and APA 7 rules; critical reading of empirical articles, the literature synthesis matrix and justification of the research gap; research designs in clinical psychology; psychometric evaluation and selection of measurement instruments; statistical power analysis and sample size justification; research ethics, informed consent, protection of personal data and the ethics committee process; pre-registration and open science practices; the ethical and declared use of generative artificial intelligence tools; online data collection infrastructure, the data management plan and the codebook; data cleaning, descriptive and confirmatory analyses with R/RStudio or SPSS; production of tables, figures and text in APA 7 format; the design of scientific posters and oral presentations; and the process of preparing a project proposal for research funding programmes.
Course Precondition
There is no formal prerequisite; however, because of the applied intensity of the course, students are expected to have successfully completed Research Methods and Statistics.
Resources
Kazdin, A. E. (2024). Research design in clinical psychology (6th ed.). Cambridge University Press.
Notes
Field, A. (2026). Discovering statistics using R and RStudio (2nd ed.). SAGE. The sources listed above are some of the course’s primary textbooks. Articles, theses, and book chapters related to the research topic are other resources for the course.
