Course Goal / Objective
This course introduces undergraduate mathematics students to the fundamental terminology and language structures used in abstract mathematics, based on Chapter Zero: Fundamental Notions of Abstract Mathematics by Carol Schumacher. Students develop skills in understanding and using mathematical statements, set theory, logic, definitions, proof techniques, and functions in English. The course emphasizes reading, writing, and explaining mathematical concepts clearly and accurately, helping students gain confidence in both mathematical reasoning and academic English communication.
Course Content
This course covers the fundamental concepts of abstract mathematics using Chapter Zero: Fundamental Notions of Abstract Mathematics by Carol Schumacher as the main text. Topics include mathematical statements, set theory, logic and quantifiers, methods of definition, basic proof techniques, and an introduction to functions. Emphasis is placed on understanding and using correct mathematical terminology and language structures in English through reading, writing, and problem-based activities.
