Course Goal / Objective
This course aims to introduce students to the theoretical foundations of the concept of leadership, to examine classical and contemporary leadership approaches from a comparative perspective, and to provide a critical perspective on how acquired theoretical knowledge can be applied to professional and academic contexts across different disciplines. Building upon a foundation that traces classical and contemporary leadership theories, the course seeks to offer a holistic perspective synthesized with the Sustainable Leadership and Management framework (Hargreaves & Fink, 2006; Avery & Bergsteiner, 2010) at the end of the term.
Course Content
This course begins by defining leadership and distinguishing it from management, then traces the historical development of leadership research. It comparatively examines trait and behavioral theories (Stogdill, Ohio State, Michigan, Blake & Mouton), contingency theories (Fiedler, Hersey-Blanchard, Path-Goal Theory, LMX), transformational and charismatic leadership approaches (Burns, Bass, House, Conger-Kanungo), and contemporary post-heroic models such as servant, authentic, distributed, and ethical leadership. Following units on emotional intelligence, change and crisis leadership, and cross-cultural leadership (the GLOBE study), the course concludes by synthesizing these theories through Hargreaves & Fink's Sustainable Leadership principles and Avery & Bergsteiner's Honeybee/Locust model. By the end of the course, students will be able to critically evaluate diverse leadership theories and integrate them into a long-term, inclusive, and sustainability-oriented understanding of leadership.
