Course Goal / Objective

The aim of this course is to provide students with general and practical knowledge of the basic principles of sheep and goat husbandry and to develop a basic understanding and awareness of sheep and goat characteristics, breeds, housing, feeding, reproduction, newborn care, products, preventive health practices, and animal welfare.

Course Content

Basic principles of sheep and goat husbandry; fundamental biological and behavioural characteristics of sheep and goats; major sheep and goat breeds; housing and environmental conditions; basic feeding practices; reproduction, mating, pregnancy and parturition; care and rearing of newborn lambs and kids; milk production and milking practices; meat, milk, wool, hair and other small ruminant products; basic preventive health and management practices; animal behaviour and welfare; annual flock and herd management; and basic field practices.
