Course Goal / Objective
1. To introduce the meaning of the terminology and physical principles of heat transfer. 2. To train students to identify and describe appropriate transport phenomena (fluid mechanics, heat and mass transfer) for any process or system involving heat transfer (in engineering and everyday life). 3. To show students how to use required inputs for computing heat transfer rates and/or material (solid, liquid, gas) temperatures.
Course Content
Basic concepts of thermodynamics and heat transfer. Heat conduction equation. Steady heat conduction: Resistance approach, fins. Transient heat conduction. Forced convection. Natural convection. Heat exchangers.

LO05 | Demonstrate an understanding of the fundamentals of the relationship between fluid flow and convection heat transfer and apply empirical correlations for both forced and free (natural) convection to determine values for the convection heat transfer coefficient and calculate heat transfer rate. |
