Course Goal / Objective
The aim is to provide students with the knowledge that soil, as a living, dynamic and heterogeneous structure, plays many roles within the ecosystem; that it is a growth and feeding environment for plants; that it is an indispensable material in the natural cycle of all macro and micro elements such as C, N, S, etc., as well as to provide them with knowledge and experience such as determining suitable soil properties that are important for plant growth.
Course Content
Soil concept, importance of soil, parent material of soils, composition and properties (minerals and rocks), soil forming processes: Physical, chemical and biological weathering, texture (structure) and its importance for soil ecology and fertility, structure of clay minerals and its importance for soil fertility, definition and classification of soil organic matter and its importance for soil, soil organisms and their effect on soil properties, adsorption of cations and factors affecting it, adsorption of anions and factors affecting it, soil acidity and its relationship with soil fertility, soil structure, types of structure, factors forming structure in soil, importance of structure for soil, soil water, soil color and temperature, importance of plant nutrients in soils, availability and classification.

Course Learning Outcomes
Order | Course Learning Outcomes |
---|---|
LO01 | Understands that soil is not a simple sheltering material but a dynamic entity containing living, organic and inorganic structures. |
LO02 | Predict the roles of factors such as parent rock, topography, time, climate, and living organisms in soil formation and the effect of each of these factors on soil properties. |
LO03 | Understands that soils are not only have impact on the plant growth, yield and quality characteristics, but also have significant effects on obtaining safe food and human health. |
LO04 | Understand that agricultural practices such as irrigation, fertilization and tillage vary according to soil characteristics. |
LO05 | Understands that soil filters and buffers environmental pollutants in terms of the ecological balance. |
