Course Goal / Objective
The aim of this course is to help pre-service science teachers develop a comprehensive understanding of the nature of science (including its ontological and epistemological foundations). The course focuses on enabling students to grasp the structure of scientific knowledge, the functioning of scientific processes, the development of scientific concepts, and the tentative nature of scientific knowledge. It also introduces various approaches and classroom practices for teaching the nature of science, equipping pre-service teachers with the knowledge and skills necessary to integrate these concepts into their instructional practices. Additionally, the course aims to enhance scientific literacy by exploring the relationships between science, technology, society, and the environment, particularly through the lens of socioscientific issues.
Course Content
nature of knowledge (ontology, epistemology, nature of scientific concepts, scientific knowledge and its characteristics); concepts and teaching approaches related to the nature of science (science, scientific knowledge and its properties, scientific literacy and the nature of science, the place of the nature of science in science curricula, teaching the nature of science); in-class activities in teaching the nature of science; the relationship between the nature of science and science, technology, society, environment, the nature of science in the context of socio-scientific issues
